UI 065: Violence

***WARNING*** This Podcast is about violence and so I used some graphic language in describing violence, and some of that has been transcribed in this blog. What do you think about violence? Let me paint a picture for you and you can think about it. Imagine a young single mother has just put her child down for an afternoon nap.  She makes a snack and sits to relax and watch some … [Read more...]

Parsha Eikev: Mission Impossible? Or Mission So Simple?

This week we read Parsha Eikev (Ekev, Ekeb, Aikev, or Eqeb) which means "if you."  Eikev consists of  Deuteronomy 7:12–11:25.  You can read a brief summary here. Deuteronomy 7: 12If you pay attention to these laws and are careful to follow them, then the Lord your God will keep his covenant of love with you, as he swore to your ancestors. 13He will love you and bless you and increase your … [Read more...]

UI 064: Why Hysteria and the 6 Human Needs (pt. 2)

In the last episode I discussed various hysterias (if that is the plural form... Is there a distinct plural form for hysteria?), and why they are an ultimate issue (a main point being they distract from real evil and high risk threats). So, I figured in this episode I should tackle WHY people choose hysteria as a mode of operation. I suppose I should first admit my assumption.  Yes, I think … [Read more...]

Parsha Va’etchanan: Out of Sight, Out of Mind

This week we read Parsha Va'etchanan (Va'eschanan) which means “and I pleaded.”  Va'etchanan consists of  Deuteronomy 3:23–7:11.  You can read a very brief summary here. Deuteronomy 4 (NIV): 32Ask now about the former days, long before your time, from the day God created human beings on the earth; ask from one end of the heavens to the other. Has anything so great as this ever happened, or has … [Read more...]

UI 063: Cuckoo for Cocoa Puffs? (Hysteria pt. 1)

Every week or month there is a new hysteria, and people love it.  Why? Why do people seem to actually enjoy and thrive on hysterical claims, conspiracy theories, and the like? And why does it seem like most if not almost all hysteria are based on false prophecy? Since I was a child, I have not only not been caught up hysterics... I actually have an aversion to hype and hysteria.  When … [Read more...]

UI 062: Why Do We Hate for No Reason? And What Can We Do About It?

Is the world catching fire or is it simply back to normal?  For most of human history mankind has narrowly survived.  Sure some individuals thrived as rulers, but the general populations suffered for their benefit.  Whether it was us killing each other, or disease, or the environment... It seems like mankind survived by some miracle or chance opportunity.  Then, there were brief moments of … [Read more...]

Parsha Masei: Are We There Yet?

This week we read Parsha Masei (Mas’ei or Masse) which means "journeys".  Masei consists of Numbers 33:1–36:13.  You can read a brief summary here. The first verse of Parsha Masei is: Numbers 33: 1These are the journeys(masei) of the children of Israel going out of the land of Mitzrayim (Egypt)...  Why is the word "journeys" instead of the singular form "journey"?  Wasn't it one long journey … [Read more...]

UI 060: “The 14 Habits of Highly Miserable People & How to succeed at self-sabotage.”

So this week's podcast was based on an essay I recently read by a woman who has taught me a tremendous amount, Cloe Madanes. Here is her bio in case you don't know of her: Cloé Madanes, HDL, LIC is a world-renowned innovator and teacher of family and strategic therapy and one of the originators of the strategic approach to family therapy. She has authored seven books that are classics in the … [Read more...]

Parsha Balak: Strength through Significance

This week we read parsha Balak.  The name Balak means “devastator,” “empty,” or “wasting.”  The name Balak apparently derives from the sparsely used Hebrew verb (balak), “waste or lay waste.” There are no derivations of this verb besides this name. (source: Wikipedia).  Balak consists of  Numbers 22:2–25:9.  A very brief summary can be found here.  Here is how the Balak begins: Numbers 22 … [Read more...]

UI 057: Free Choice and the Consequences of Stage One Thinking…

Sometimes I am stunned by peoples behaviors.  Do they think about what they are doing?  Do they think before, during, or after they choose to act a certain way?  Do they really think about the results and aftermath of their choices? Do I? Seriously, it is fascinating to think about myself and others in regards to how we choose to behave.  I know I am presupposing we have a choice.  Others … [Read more...]
